Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Probiotics in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

The first onset of IBS often coincides with an antibiotic treatment, and it’s natural to think of a connection with disturbed gut flora. Even though disturbed gut flora is probably not the root cause of IBS, it’s a major contributor to the discomfort it causes. It looks as if people with IBS are particularly likely to develop disturbed gut flora.

Probiozym is a probiotic product which consists of 4 species of lactic acid bacteria with two distinct functions. The first is that Probiozym in most instances very efficiently establishes a healthy gut flora. The other is that it breaks down opioid peptides (see protein intolerance). IBS patients very often (or nearly always) suffer from disturbed gut flora, and is probably the patient group which benefits the most from using Probiozym. The reason for this is probably that Probiozym has an outstanding ability to adhere to surfaces. This makes them able to displace the harmful bacterial species. Probiozym will also regulate the consistency of the gut contents so that diarrhea and constipation are mostly avoided. Probiozym also seems to outcompete some gas producing bacteria. As a consequence, a swelled abdomen is usually reduced to almost normal size within a 2 month period. Reduced gas production also means less abdominal pain.

Peptide analysis and diet

We haven’t observed any connection between IBS and protein intolerance. The peptide analysis is therefore of little interest for those with a firmly established IBS diagnosis. We have no indication that a gluten- and/or casein-free diet has any effect for this patient group. But if the patient in addition has mental problems, a peptide analysis could be relevant since the conditions could be unrelated.
